About This Blog
Hi there,
Welcome to Weekly Dose of Green, where you can find blog posts about nature. We will talk about the endless benefits of nature and how you can preserve biodiversity in your own backyard. This is a place to geek out about your backyard ecosystem and enjoy the peaceful escape that nature provides.
Here, you can read about inspiring ways to preserve and restore biodiversity in your own yard. As a former ecology student, this blog is my hobby and passion project. It was inspired by my favorite books on biodiversity, my studies, and my childhood spent on forested acreage. I have a love of nature and a passion for restoring it where each of us can.
As an avid reader of entomologist, Doug Tallamy’s books, I support the idea that we can’t wait for corporations to make the right choices and for conservation efforts to catch up. While conservation efforts are helpful, biodiversity has been destroyed at such a rate that it will take all of us to lend nature a helping hand. One of the first steps is to pave a way for nature.
That’s why this blog is for any nature enthusiast who has a yard, land, or even just a balcony. If this describes you, please follow along. We’ll cover tips on how you can restore biodiversity in small spaces with with native plants in your yard or container garden, plus preservation tactics. If you’ve ever wanted to help the environment but felt powerless as just one person, this content is meant to inspire you.
About the Author
I’m Amanda Cummins, the author of this blog. Here is a little bit of information about me and what inspired this content. I was raised on a ranch in Texas where we had dense forests, beautiful gardens, and native plants. Our family held a deep respect for wildlife and nature, so we left the forests on our property alone. They grow tall outside my front door to this day!
We didn’t have production animals but rather, very large “pets” that were part of the family. My late parents were city folk who moved out to the country for a simpler life. They always encouraged my sisters and me to be true to ourselves and follow our dreams (silly or practical). That is why in college, I knew I eventually wanted to start this blog.
Once torn between English and science, I majored in ecology for three years before earning my B.S. in Professional Writing. While I studied ecology in depth prior to writing, I don’t claim to be an expert. Therefore, I’ll present topics I’ve researched with sources for you to do further reading if you’d like to learn more, and I’ll present biodiversity topics in a digestible, applicable way. I hope you’ll enjoy discussing backyard nature topics with me as we all continue learning about the difference we can all make for the ecosystem.
